An Imperial vampire who fought twenty years for the Ebonheart Pact, took the Ruby Throne with the Pact's backing, and governed Cyrodiil for fifteen years. The Imperial record says the throne stood empty the whole time. Twenty-one chapters, compiled from his sword.

All three of them were on this island. Hjalti's sixth movement is set here. Arcturus held a lane above the harbour. Valyria remembered a signal fire and the man who kept it burning, and never learned his name.

Hjalti Snowmane
Archdruid
Born on the southern shore of Atmora and given the blood at nine, by inheritance rather than accident. He left at twenty-two, crossed on two ships, and ended as Archdruid of a green circle that had no precedent for him. Six movements, in the order he survived them.
“The wolf is not our business,” they told him in the first week, “and it never will be.”

2E 583 · Coldharbour · the foot of the Endless Stair
She was climbing to Heart's Grief with the Amulet of Kings and Meridia's light on her. He had been sent to keep the bottom of the stair open against an army that does not stay dead in its own realm. They spoke for less than a minute. Her account calls him the pale man who held the stair — she did not ask his name and he did not give it.
The invasion record lists her name. It does not list his.

Valyria Lar
Ruling Blood of Clan Lar
Merethic Era — present · Dunmer, vampire, ascended Blood Scion
Mannimarco tore her soul out himself and dropped her into the Wailing Prison. She got out, spent a year gathering the people who could end the Planemeld, killed the necromancer who had unmade her, and struck Molag Bal in his own seat — then fed on what cracked, and came back as something with no name in any text. Meridia returned her soul. She took a ruin in Blackreach, filled it, founded Clan Lar, and has been cataloguing everything since.

The documented window
Only one of them fits on the line
The bars cover 2E 578 to 599, which is the stretch the chronicles actually date. Hjalti's begins in an Atmora nobody recorded a year for. Arcturus does not end. Valyria was already old when the window opened and is still writing inside it.

The archive is not mine. Valyria founded the clan and began the Scarlet Archive, and she has kept it in her own hand since Blackreach. I keep the shelves in order, and I write down the parts she was not there for.
Arcturus had to be read out of his sword, which is the only witness left to him. Hjalti dictated his six movements and corrected me twice while he was doing it. Valyria's entry I have barely touched, because she wrote it herself. Twenty-seven chapters across four years, in two languages. Where the sources disagree I say which one I followed. I would rather leave a gap than fill one.
